Licensing¶
Starting with version 0.6.0, botrail is source-available under two public licenses. You may use botrail under either license whose conditions cover your use. Use that is not covered by either license requires a separate written commercial license from UnRobotics Inc.
This page is a practical summary, not a replacement for the license terms. If this page and a license differ, the license terms control.
Public license options¶
Small businesses¶
The PolyForm Small Business License 1.0.0 permits use for the benefit of a company only when both of its size conditions are met:
- fewer than 100 total employees and independent contractors; and
- less than USD 1,000,000 (2019) total revenue in the prior tax year, adjusted for inflation as specified by the license.
The license defines “your company” to include organizations under common control. Read the full terms when counting people, revenue, and related organizations.
Noncommercial use¶
The PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0 permits noncommercial purposes and the categories of personal and institutional use described in its terms. A commercial evaluation or a project with an anticipated commercial application is not automatically covered merely because it is called research, testing, or a proof of concept.
These licenses impose field-of-use and organization-size conditions, so botrail 0.6.0 and later is source-available software, not open-source software under the Open Source Definition.
Commercial use¶
If neither public license permits your use, obtain a commercial license before using botrail. The licensor and commercial contracting entity is:

Use the UnRobotics Inc. contact form to discuss pricing and terms. The repository does not grant a commercial license; commercial rights arise only from a separate written agreement.
Common questions¶
Which license do I choose?¶
You do not need to make a repository change or send a notice to choose between the two public licenses. Your actual use must satisfy all conditions of at least one of them. If it does not, or if you are unsure, contact UnRobotics Inc. before using botrail.
Does an integrator's license cover its customer?¶
No license under the PolyForm terms can be sublicensed or transferred. Every party that uses botrail must independently have rights for that use. If an integrator delivers botrail itself, a runtime containing botrail, or a project that requires the customer to run botrail, the customer's use must qualify under a public license or be covered by a commercial agreement.
Are generated files covered by the botrail license?¶
The license governs the botrail software. An ordinary generated file that does not contain botrail code is not made subject to these terms merely because botrail created it. A deliverable can still contain botrail software, modified botrail code, or third-party material with its own terms, so inspect what you distribute. This does not change any rights in your input data.
Can a large organization evaluate botrail for free?¶
Only when the evaluation is permitted by the PolyForm Noncommercial terms or a separate written agreement. A large organization's commercial proof of concept is not granted a special evaluation exception by this repository.
What happened to the MIT License?¶
Versions v0.5.0 and earlier remain under the MIT License included with those releases. The 0.6.0 change does not revoke rights already granted for earlier versions. New code and distributions must be assessed using the license materials shipped with their version.
Does a license mean a robot cell is safe or certified?¶
No. A botrail license does not provide functional-safety certification and does not replace risk assessment, validation, guarding, controller safety functions, or compliance with applicable laws and standards.
